Maintaining your Confidence

This morning I worked with Keith, a sales manager who has loads of confidence when things are going well and when he has a little setback the voice in the back of his heads starts naggng on him "you can't do it, you're not good enough..." and his confidence just disappears.

So I ask him "what are you like when you are confident?" and have him project his confidence on a big screen in front of him and have him sort out things that work on the right of his screen and things that do...

Turning Fear into Laughter

This week Jim came to see me. Jim is a very successful entrepreneur who runs a business with his partner Rosie. I ask Jim "what do you want?" and he looks up and to the left then looks me straight in the eye and very confidently says "I want to be more confident. " Somewhat curious as to how he can confidently tell me that he lacks confidence I say to him "tell me more".

He looks across horizontally to his right squints a little and says "when I hear her say positive things about me and ...

Words and Senses

This week began with a wonderful session with Pete who wants to learn how to have more confidence when taking driving lessons and to pass his test. I make him a cup of tea to begin the session and ask "So what do you want?" He looks down and to his right and says "I want to be more confident when I am driving".

"How do you feel when you are confident?" I ask. He defocusses his eyes, looks straight ahead, points to his solar plexus and says "I don't feel this fear in the pit of my sto...

Eliciting Precisely

This month as I walked through a narrow path towards a cIassroom at a school in mid-sussex early one Saturday morning on my way to probably my twenty third Introduction to NLP workshop I heard the sounds of birds singing behind and in front of me and I paused to look up at a large beech tree that had recently had some of it's larger branches pruned. As I paused to really enjoy the moment I suddenly realised how much time I spend thinking of what I am about to do, very focussed on what I...

Consistency

A question that has sat in the back of my mind for years of doing change work with NLP is how come some changes are easier to accomplish than others? Sometimes an hour long session creates rapid and permanent change, like with Nick who came to see me to stop smoking and after one session stopped. In these instances the basic NLP techniques like swish pattern, fast phobia cure, reframing in trance work what appear to be miracles. Almost like these kind of changes require no concious practice. C...

Doing what Works

Each month I write this newsletter and consistently since1st December 2006 I sit in front of my keyboard staring out of the window at the top of the trees and the sky, listening to some inspiring music and feeling almost compelled to write the newsletter around the first of each month and getting it done. This month I'm sitting here on the 19th March wondering what to write for the March newsletter which was due to go out on the first of this monthEmbarassed This reminds me of the other day when I w...

The Skill of Self-Belief

This month I want to tell the story of Tracy, a young girl of fourteen who lost her self-belief and how she found it again. She had moved in with her boyfriend and was not going to school. She sat in front of me with her head down, face flushed slightly red and began to tell me how she sould "ave anybody in the school" and how everyone got scared when she "went off on one". She said to me "I don't see the point of school, and I don't get on with the teachers or my mum." Then she began ...

The Power of Choice

This month I worked with Art, a very caring and professional pharmacist who had been off work long-term sick with "stress" for many months. As we sat down to work together I asked him "what do you want?"

He responded by describing to me how he worried about what he was being asked to do at work which seemed to be increasingly a sales role (involving dispensing increasing quantities of non-prescription drugs). He said "I have to keep on doing this to safeguard my pension even though my bo...

Pacing and Leading to Success

I saw an email this week from Steve, a friend who has just moved to live in an idyllic cottage with an open fire overlooking a mountain in Wales - "and it's all your fault !!!!" said the email.

So I sat at my pc and I said to myself "What response do you want when you communicate with somebody else?"

I had simply asked Steve "where do you  want to be in five years time?"

He replied "I had never really thought about it until you asked me to imagine myself in that place, i...
